Just finished re reading this book during another run through the series. IMO probably the best book in the series.
The back story of Calhoun and Shelby and their exploits at the academy is tons of fun. Calhoun is so cartoonish in his abilities, but the way Peter David writes it is exciting and just believable enough for the Star Trek Universe that I was able to suspend my disbelief and go along for the ride.
The Janos storyline with Kebron investigating is gripping and filled with great dialogue, character interpersonal and internal conflict, and action.
I'm always up for hearing about Kebron getting a run for his money in a hand-to-hand battle.
