An interesting ride. I had no previous knowledge of the game when starting the show. Tbh I started watching because I was a fan of the animation studio, studio mir. I loved their work on legend of korra. But the story is where I think the show falls flat.
This show expects you to know a lot right off the jump. If you’re like me, who is not fan of the game, you kind of struggle to figure out what’s going on. That’s not a very effective way to make a video game adaptation or any kind of adaptation for that matter. I like that their appealing to the fans of the game but not at the expense of us newbies. There are aspects and characters that I like. I like the invoker and his scenes are always enjoyable. Marci is a given. I enjoy Luna’s interactions with the cast. But because of the extremely fast pacing of the show, I don’t care about these characters all too much. Scenes do not linger long enough to really hit you emotionally. If someone dies or gets hurt and I barley bat an eye, if anything I kind of just say “oh no” haha. Also the sound design seemed a bit off at times like it felt too high over the voices or it didn’t have enough impact.
Tbh I’m not entirely sure what happened but I can say I at least enjoyed it to some extent. The score and animation were pretty good especially in the 3rd season it seems they really put all hands on deck.
A side note on the animation ( you can ignore this if you don’t rlly care abt the animation quality) if anyone noticed a difference in the animation I think I can maybe offer a bit of an explanation…? S1 was overseen by studio mir and was actually animated by production reve, who have worked with them on animated shows in the past. So they were responsible for the animation while mir directed them. S2 was studio Mir’s animation. I don’t believe the full crew worked on this season though bc around this time they were also doing young justice phantoms and a mortal combat animated film. Season three I think had the full force of the crew because I can see a stark rise in the quality of animation.
As for the 3d, it didn’t bother me that much. I think the studio did a good job integrating it. Mir has it in their contracts to include 3d animation to take some stress of the animators which lightens their 2d workload. So if you look at other series, shorts or films they’ve worked on you’ll see 3d. Sorry 🤷🏾♂️
But I applaud all the artists who works on the show, the writers on the other hand…. you know what you did. All jokes aside I can say I liked the show enough to finish it. It just had some kinks that needed to be worked out.
