"I activated my woke goggles as I turned it on and yup, bad guys were white and there was representation from different ethnicities."
I saw this review and I had to comment on it. It was an utterly ridiculous comment because the "good guys" weren't black. No one watched Game of Thrones and said "Cersei is white. It's woke!" There was nothing inherently racial about this movie.
There are plenty of Black villains. The most recent comes to mind is Kang the Conqueror, Killmonger. There was also the Kingpin in Daredevil. And more.
If you have to put on your "woke goggles", than your review loses all objectivity (and credibility).
Do I like forced diversity or race swapping myself? NO. But I'm sick of people hiding their bigotry and biases by saying something is instantly woke because they saw a couple of brown/black people who barely had any speaking role in the movie.
Now for the actual review:
LIKES:
+Visually appealing.
+A fun twist on fairytale tropes.
+The scene with the ceremony was creepy and very cult like.
+Having the princess actually get harmed (burns, cuts, blood, scrapes) and how Millie showcased emotional duress.
DISLIKES:
-The dialogue was cliche.
-I wish they had spent more time with the backstory and developing the villains.
-Angela Bassett was under utilized.
OKAY:
+/-Princess Elodie suddenly being able to fight like a knight through pure grit without any scenes showcasing prior training. I gotta say her upper body strength put me to shame. I mean, it's fantasy. But she did use her cleverness and wits in many other scenes.
