The Watchmaker is a story about a Jewish family in Poland at the start of World War II and the suffering caused to them by the Nazis. While the author states it is a book of fiction, the story was based upon information passed to him by his parents who were survivors of the Holocaust. It seems impossible to believe that so many atrocities were endured by a people not really so long ago. The book discusses these atrocities, but in such a way that the reader really routes for them to survive.
The story takes many twists from beginning to end. The story explores survival, revenge, friendship, love, and endurance. For such a hard subject to tackle, the author takes the reader on a grand adventure through eastern Europe in order to escape the brutality of the Germans, and seek a new life. Nothing comes without a price however.
I encourage readers to seek out this book. It is very well written. I am looking forward to its sequel.
