Ah! A passionate love letter to ‘Au bout de souffle’ and the wonders of Godard, Seberg and Belmondo. Life in black and white - was it better or are our glasses rose tinted? A tour de force technically, demonstrating devotion amounting to reverence, even idolatry. Certainly affection. Gauloises, Citroens, Chabrol, Truffaut and the gang. And, yes a girl, and, yes, a gun. BTW Congrats to the team that assembled all those period motors. Impeccable. If you are too young to know ‘Breathless’, find and watch it first. And, by the way, poor you. Brilliant and it made me happy and sad.

Delightfully rough-edged acting and directing in the grand Italian tradition. Warm and engaging ensemble cast, with some excellent tension and unpredictable story moments. What’s not to like about grave robbers and an abandoned railway station? A cheerful celebration of the colour of hard-scrabble poverty with pasta.

The phenomenon of heartless violence as comedy is an interesting sub genre in film - think of Hardboiled, Hana-Bi and the earlier Reservoir Dogs. It takes a little time to realise where we are, and settle into the milieu. The clue comes with Matt Smith’s tongue in cheek (and utterly unconvincing) cockney punk and then the plastic cat poo. Once that’s been established, we can sit back and lap up the nihilism. Inventive car chase in wholly inappropriate location. Nice. Unorthodox orthodox gangsters. Nicer. Entirely credible love element. And good piling on of worse and worse pickles. Wasn’t so keen on the hero’s portentous back story. No need to explain this stuff. Just go for it. Oh, and how did he get out of the strong room??

Slow, stagey, dull characters, half-hearted acting and a pedestrian plot. The vertical yellow car is striking, and the earthquake persuasive, but the rest is trite. Japanese films used to lighten the world with poetry and passion. How things change.
