I sincerely apologize if my description isnt articulate, and if it does not give the novel justice, for i am simply a man who wants to speak my mind, and inform others of the contents of the book. I would also like to apologize if i have mischaracterised anyone, please correct me if i have said anything wrong, for i wish to grasp a deeper understanding of both the protagonist, and the whole book itself. even though no longer human is rather short compared to the novels i read, it is definitely more meaningful, and interesting than some generic book, seeing how the main character thinks and perceives life is so interesting, and realistic. I would overall say it was a good book, but i prefer "the idiot" by dostoyevsky, simply due to its more digestible use of words. yes, it is harder to get into Dostoyevsky's works, but i felt like his writing style calls out more to me, it is simply a matter of personal opinion, for both authors are incredible writers. I feel like everyone can relate to the main character, whether they admit it or not. he is a flawed individual, very much so, and cynical, dismissing himself as a disgrace of a human, and others refer to him as "insane". by no means you should be proud of relating to him, yet he makes rather good points, even if stained by his outlook and flaws as a "human", or sub-human, whatever you wish to refer to him as. he is a realistic character, and can portray the depravity of a "human". It can also show how humans turn to things such as prostitution, alcohol and drugs to help the numbness. the main character mainly lived a life of constant fear, and rarely ever felt love and happiness, he rarely felt anything. his "emotions" were simply a mask, hiding his true self. he described it as "clownery". as his life declines, he turns to substances and whatnot, which eventually leads to poverty. the main character mainly struggled with poverty for most of the books length, and it isnt something i can personally relate to, but his writing portrays the struggles well.
also- this book introduced me to Bungou Stray Dogs, so check that out too, it's pretty damn cool. also if you like Kafka's writing, you'll probably like this too. heavy read for most, but overall an amazing read, 10/10.
also read the flowers of baffoonery no one talks abt it PLEASE.
Dazai's writing style isn't for everyone, and he uses long words that i had to google LMAO but um yeah dazai is a brilliant author
I personally feel like some people get the wrong message from no longer human, or romanticize it, when you really shouldn't. one of my favorite things about dazai is how he isnt shy to show the world the darkest, muckiest parts of humanity, in an objective way. this is simply the life of Oba, and this is his deluded and flawed thinking.
