I was surprised by this book... In the beginning it felt like a 19th century novel with long digressions about the interior thoughts of the characters. When the bad guy getsi introduced, things really pick up, and I felt like I was suddenly reading a thriller. The book took off for me.
But: the mounting chaos and destruction which consumes the play Macbeth doesn't work in Burnam Wood. I didn't feel, at the end, that I had witnessed an inevitable tragedy. But that I had been taken to a place I never wanted -- or expected -- to go. I wanted to shout: what?!!
When I finished it last night, I almost wished I hadn't started it.
