subjectively, the inheritance games has a great plot idea. maybe the concept of a rags-to-riches girl thrust into a high-society life isn’t the most novel idea, but it’s certainly an interesting premise with lots of room for original ideas.
the plot element i was most thrilled about were the puzzles. the way it’s called the “inheritance games” makes it seem like a very “young adult mr limoncellos library”-esque story. it… was not. the book is so slow-moving that at times, i felt tempted to put it down and go do something productive (which is unheard of for me). this book uses excessive dramatics, to the point where the “twists” or “dramatic reveals” are actually not that dramatic because they happen like FIVE TIMES A CHAPTER.
it gets to a stage where you’re not sure what part of this is supposed to be entertaining. i went into this experience expecting a riveting book that i wouldn’t be able to put down. instead, what i got was a disappointing, slow-moving “mystery”. (spoiler alert - it wasn’t very mysterious).
the twists are predictable, and the book doesn’t spend enough time fleshing out the GAME, which this entire thing is about. instead, there are weird and highly unnecessary romantic subplots. (which i wouldn’t be mad about if they were done WELL). she has her token poc friend (for diversity ofc) and unbearably cringy lines such as “im a hypercompetitive, bisexual perfectionist who likes to win”… like this has to be the laziest plot setup ever. i took a slight detour there… back to the whole romance thing. it sucks. oH nO sHe hAs tO cHoOsE bEtWeEn tWo hOt riCh dUdEs wHo wiLl sHe piCk? oH tHeYrE sO bRoCkEn 🥺🥺🥺. LIKE SHUT UP AND GET BACK TO THE MYSTERY!!!
the end was really unsatisfying and boringly predictable. both love interests are awful people who basically play with the main characters emotions.
oh speaking of emotions, the main character has a sister who gets abused by her bf right? and normally i would enjoy this plot as it brings insight into her brocken life. except the one huge problem is that the abuse storyline straight up sucks. it trivializes it and reads like a second grader wrote it.
all in all, this book is mediocre and i give it 2/5 stars purely because of xander hawthorne, the best out of all the brothers (and also the only poc brother)
thanks for reading this long long review
