Étoile is the latest show by the husband and wife team the Palladinos. They wrote Gilmore girls and marvelous Mrs Maisel. Both stand out shows full of character, heart, and clever writing. I went into Etoile wanting to love it the same way i have loved their previous work. There were moments that i truly did love, some of the side characters, and small story arcs here and there. But overall the series as a whole is a bit lackluster, miscast, and aimless. Overall it doesn’t seem as thought out as their other works.
The best example of this is the main thread of the show. The biggest ballets in New York and Paris swap cast members in an attempt to save their dying theaters.
Does this make sense to anyone as being a tactic to save a theater? I can’t wrap my head around why this decision would help anyone for any reason. Never mind save their dying theaters.
I didn’t like the show. I wanted to love it. There were moments i did love but overall it was not my favorite Palladino show. If i had not seen their other work i would have turned this off after the pilot. But knowing how taleted the creators are i watched the entire season. The aimless lackluster continued through out but by episode three things started to make more sense and the moments of genius started to pick up.
They have already been green lit for season 2. I will watch it. I love the palladino’s as story tellers that much. i just hope they have time to make some positive changes to the show. they are truly remarkable story tellers and i think this story needed some more development time to truly shine.
