It was everything I feared and didn’t want it to be. As an anime fan I had high hopes that the movie would be able to resurge the qualities that made TLOR series the masterpiece that it is. Without the enormous budget costs this movie should have allowed the producers/directors to revive the visual wonders and themes that made us want to watch middle earth time and time again. Sadly this was not the case , the plot drew on quite possibly the most boring, predictable theme possible. The small horse clan Rohirrim and their peasant village folk to the 100 bone fade mountain clan was like watching two Sunday football teams squabble. Utterly boring with none of the scale, grittiness and dominance shown in TLOR movies. We all remember watching wormtongue shed a tear in disbelief as he first gazes upon the massed formations of the Uruk hai hordes at Isengard. That’s what sells movies. I at least expected by having the beauty of anime that we would have had something on par with Castlevania in being able to show gore and violence .. but no, not even a smidge. Some of the animation of the village hall and the siege tower was good though.
The female archetype of the protaganist, trying to prove her worth in a male dominant society is something we see constantly in modern day cinema. And this too followed that desperate narrative. Don’t even get me started at the bit where she puts on the wedding dress to go into battle , am I watching a Disney movie or something ?
1.5/10 movie I just wanted it to end so I could go to McDonald’s
