Yeah.. nope. i had hoped they'd fix it after the premiere but no, rate it lower than I did previously
It does good to trick you into thinking that it is. until you realize it's Tolkien's work. but even if it was a random show it probably wouldn't work. Amazing characters like Gil Galid, Elrond, Calebrimbor, the Numenorians, etc. have been reduced to weirdly weak and dumber versions of themselves to make way for characters like Galadriel (favourite character in lotr). which they wrote extremely angry, heartless, selfish, and ready to sacrifice everyone's lives around her for her ambitions. It's just not her. Characters ripped from different timelines, fit into the show to make it easier for the writers. Then removing important characters like Celeborn - Galadriels's husband and her daughter (doesn't exist in the show) to make her 'look strong' and removed them made her a soldier. when she was one of the most powerful sorcerers in the books. she was already a strong female character.
There were also a lot of confusing decisions when they wrote the people of 'middle earth'. The Southlands were whiny, uninteresting and annoying. The same goes for the mum and her son. Is the mum going from a normal single widow, with no training to an experienced fighter the next? Able to decapitate orcs in one swing and take over as their leader? doesnt make sense. just a slog to watch them. They wrote Elves (the most experienced race in middle earth) insanely stupid and inexperienced for people having lifespans reaching 1000s of years. ex. Galadriel is around 5000 years old here. and they fought and killed Morgoth. yet can't fight a single troll. bar the main character, cliche. They turned the Badass Giant-like Numenoreans and made them normal humans who don't know how to fight. And the Harfoots. Why were they written more evil than the orcs? extremely judgmental and they leave people who can't keep up 'behind'. Even if they're wounded and aren't really fuzzed when one of them dies. Even Galadriel tries to do the same in the first episode. And yet the orcs treat each other better. their leader cries when one normal orc dies, they all have names, care for one another, and are trying to find a home. Adar defends them, calling them people too. Galadriel calls them abominations.
The characters teleport around middle earth like crazy. going on journeys that even the characters say it'll take a long time. ex. the numenoreans travel month/s to middle earth to save the southlanders, yet that was in the timespan of 1 day for the southlanders. And they made it just in time. or Galadriel "travels 6 days straight" with halbrand whos dying/bleeding out quickly but seemingly makes it there within hours. or Elrond and Celebrimbor travel to the dwarves (definitely a month/s journey) but make it there in the same 'spotless' clothes they were wearing when they left with no horses in sight. so they just walked there? you get my point.
and then finally.. Tolkien would probably have a heart attack seeing this on screen. in this show, Sauron proposed to Galadriel.. the 'Dark Lord', basically the personification of evil.. is in love? with Galadriel? She has always despised him as anyone should.. but the writers of this show write zero chemistry or indication they're in love. She loves him too?! but funny enough, they wrote Galadriel as quite evil in this show, having fewer morals than Sauron himself strangely. insane.
if anyone has hopes for Season 2 fixing things. Season 2's script was already written before the first season aired and started filming halfway through. let's hope they don't delete this review like many other peoples.
