Wanted to like this film but couldn’t for so many reasons. The scene when the little Black boy’s character selects the word “nasty” to define who he is—that was the straw that broke the camel’s back!

Denzel Washington is among the greatest of all time, and while I deeply respect Spike Lee, this script fell short of honoring his talent. It was disheartening to see Washington’s skills—along with Jeffrey Wright’s—underutilized. At best, the film is disappointing, and even three stars feels overly generous.

Wanted to like this movie more than I actually did. Loved, however, seeing two beautiful Black people in love but I found the film to be rather flat and well, cheesy. Still, I’m glad I went as I’m all in to support positive images of my people.
