EMERGENCY EMERGENCY EVERYONE TO GET FROM STREET BECAUSE THEY WON'T EVER AGAIN MAKE ANYTHING LIKE THIS MOVIE
Can anyone imagine anyone in Hollywood making this film today? Made in 1965 - the middle of the Cold War - and dedicated to the bizarre concept that Russian submarine crew members are human beings like anyone else, live and laugh and fall in love just like Americans, and can join with them to rescue a child...today, any Hollywood producer, director or actor who dared promote any such heretical idea would be denounced as a "Putin apologist" by Amerikastani liberal warmongers, and probably never work in (that) town again.
It's not really funny, despite the promise on the poster*. It is, however, a great film, deeply moving, and deserved its Oscar. And back then an Oscar meant something.
*In fact I only found one scene laugh out loud funny, as I recall (it's been a few years since I watched this movie). Lt Rozanov steals a car, then, next scene, stops it in the middle of the road. Opens door, drags out a huge St Bernard dog, closes door, and drives off, all delivered totally deadpan and without a word.
