This film is not at all what it seems from the cover, it’s summary on the back, or even the trailers.. it takes you for an insanely wild, disturbing, and macabre ride.
So, Liz (Thora Birch) is best-friends with Frankie (Kiera Knightly) and also has a large (rather unhealthy) crush/obsession with their American transfer student, Mike, (Desmond) that goes from an innocent interest to a quite serious infatuation to the point of being toxic and detrimental.
The whole idea was, that they were to stay in the bomb shelter, that Liz’s friend, Martyn, had known about in the forest in order to get out of a school trip.
Once the 4 get down there, things seem good enough. Space to party, no one to hear them and complain, etc. But as Mikes plans to make his ex-girlfriend jealous seemingly start to fall apart he decides he wants to go home.
Prior to this, Liz gets the hint that Mike is not romantically interested in her. At least not yet..but Liz’s experience is all too different than what truly came about as to the coroner’s explanation of the 3 bodies found.
Liz’s story is basically, they all went down there, told scary stories, made breakfast & dinner together and pretty much had a coed boy/Girl Scout camping experience ,but then eventually found the door locked, leaving them evidently trapped.
Things begin to take a turn when her story is coming no where near the evidence, yet Liz is still only getting quite traumatizing glimpses/memories of what really happened. Finally as Martyn starts to roll over on Liz, she spills the whole TRUE story, and boy, was it INSANE!
If you haven’t seen this film, I won’t ruin it for you.. but all in all, this movie is definitely worth a watch. Scary in a psychological , unsettling , and quite plausible way.
If you enjoy themes / stories like this, then ‘The Hole’ is for you!
