*SPOILERS*
This movie was recommended on my watch list, and as I have never seen the film or read the novel, I decided to give it a try. I recall when it was released when I was young, and there is no way my parents would have allowed me to watch it, due to the nature of the film. So many reviewers have called this film romantic. It frightens me that the average person thinks that this is what romance is. It is not about romantic love; it is about a young man's unhealthy obsession with his girlfriend, which deepens after they have sex , and they engage in sex often, many times a week. I feel sorry for David, (an only child) as his parents are far too involved with their careers to be present and to actually parent him. David is lonely, and looking for community and a place to belong. He finds this with Jade's family, the Butterfields. Jade's parents, unfortunately, are far too permissive. They allow underage drinking, etc, in their home, and often have parties and invite many of Jade's schoolmates, but no peers of their own are present. It appears that Jade's parents live vicariously through their children. Jade's parents even allow David to slip into their daughter's bedroom after hours, or in one instance, Jade's father sees him in her bedroom, and watches as his daughter goes into her room, turns to bid him good night, and shuts the door. Jade's mother is attracted to David , and watches her daughter and David having sex in the living room. Very cringeworthy and sickening. David never gets the psychiatric help that he really needs and has many misadventures. I found the film to be sad, even depressing.
