Malayalam Movie Review: Diés Iraé ( the day of wrath ) screening in cinema halls near you!! Finally a treat for aficionados of the horror genre. Malyalam cinema keeps raising the bar high time and again with films like Drishyam etc. Worth every penny spent!! After the Bhramayugam & Bhootkaalam , ‘Dies Irae’ starring Pranav Mohanlal, director Rahul Sadasivan along with Christo Xavier crafts a chilling horror experience with brilliant sound effects and slick editing to create a feeling of dread and unease that will remain with u long after u walk out of the cinema halls. The story- A casanova scion of a rich business empire, Rohan starts experiencing paranormal occurrences after attending the funeral of his classmate and ex girlfriend Kiran who has committed suicide. What appears at first is that the spirit of the jilted girl is attacking him turns out to be something else once he starts investigating & gets to the bottom of it all. Watch out for the twist just before the interval and also the climax. As soon as u feel u've figured it all , there is another one that will baffle u for sure!! Too good 👍 👍!! Cast - Along with Pranav Mohanlal, Gibin Gopinath, Arun Ajikumar, and Jaya Kurup deliver effective performances that convey horror in a manner that seems relatable. Awesome performances without going over the top. I found the film very engaging and gripping right from the word go . A film that combines elements of Psycho , Kaun and Bhoot to right measure. A rarity nowadays!! This is a feel-good murder mystery set in a rustic environment that hits the sweet spot between humor and mystery. In the quiet village of Plachikkavu, the film follows Ujjwalan, a small-time, movie-loving local detective who finds himself caught up in a real murder investigation involving a serial killer. The premise is quite scary, and the serial killer dressed up as a scarecrow will definitely send a shiver down your spine. The ending is a bit tame, though not bad; it could have been better. However, all in all a decent one-time watch. Going with 3/5 for this one 👍👍👍

Movie Review: Thamma screening in cinema halls near you!! Maddock’s horror-comedy universe , MHCU adds another film to its lineup with Thamma . This time, the story introduces a new species known as the Betal , basically vampires. A journalist Ayushman Khurana who is on a camping trip is chased by a bear and saved by Rashmika who is a Betal. How he is introduced into the world of these supernatural beings and the adventures that follow forms the rest of the plot. The positive aspects: Fast paced .. the narrative doesnt slacken one bit throughout.. kuch na kuch hota rehta hai. Awesome Special effects and BGM ,sometimes a bit jarring to the ears but apt for the plot. The Bhediya vs Betal fight scene has been nicely shot... The relevance of which will be seen and better understood in the subsequent releases of the franchise. The CGI in the climax is also worth appreciating. It is Ayushman & Rashmika's film all the way and they give it their all. Paresh Raval as Ayushmans father manages to provide us with some humorous moments with his funny oneliners. One the flip side .. Nawazuddin Siddiqui's character is a bit of a let down .. looks more like a buffoon .. cudve been soo soo much more terrifying. Not his fault ... Script writers are to blame actually. Also some parts of the story seem ludicrous like bhediya drinking betals blood to become stronger and vice versa 🤭🤭 If u ask me to rate the movies in Maddock's comedy horror franchise.... 1) Stree 1& 2 .. most entertaining .. paisa vasool especially the first part 2) Bhediya ... Fun to watch.. even though it didnt perfom well 3) Munjya.... Balances comedy and horror well with a not so famous ensemble cast 4) Thamma .... Fast paced ... Decently made film 5) Roohi - a big let down bakwaas film even though it had grt potential Go for it .. I watched the 2D version and enjoyed it . Decent one-time watch. Don't go with grt expectations and u'll enjoy it . Going with 3/5 for this one .. A late review: Kantara: A Legend Chapter-1 screening in cinema halls near you!! Will make it a quick one as many of u might have already seen it last week. Watched the Hindi 2D version and still had a grt experience. The film has a run time of nearly 2 hrs 50 mins, a bit of a stretch if u ask me. Especially the first half which is filled with unnecessary comedy scenes which i feel cudve been shortened . This is a similar pattern followed in South Indian Cinema i guess.. choice of the audiences😥. Leaving aside the tomfoolery seen in the first half , the film really shines bright in the 2nd half which is actually when things get serious.Brilliantly conceptualized & executed. 👍👍 Cast : Wearing multiple hats as an actor, writer, and director, Rishabh Shetty delivers a stellar performance. His dedication is visible in every frame and it is impossible not to be swept away by his sheer effort and artistry. The fight scenes in the second half literally gave me goose bumps. A reminder of the first installment. Rukmini Vasanth as Rishab's love interest emerges as the surprise package of the film & shines bright. Jayaram, known for his versatility, delivers an impactful performance. Gulashan Devaiah unfortunately is under utilized, not his fault actually. His role cudve been performed by any other actor☹️.. a miss there on the part of the makers. Cinematography & Direction too is worth appreciating. Though the film's runtime cudve been reduced by 30 mins .. especially in the first half , it is a decent film to watch & enjoy in cinema halls. Though , I loved the first installment more, this one aint bad either. Going with a rating of 3.5/5 ... Web Series Review: The Trial Season 2 streaming on Jio Hotstar!! The story continues from where it ended in Season 1 , with Nyonika still working with Khanna & Chaubey Law firm and has still not forgiven her husband Jisshu Sengupta for his betrayal. Unlike the first season this one has just 6 episodes and the decision pays dividends. The Trial Season2's run time is just right and so are the cases. However on the flip side, instead of strong arguments and a gripping courtroom sequences , most of the cases are settled out of court and many of the courtroom scenes too seem superficial. That seems to be the biggest flaw of this series. The political battle between Jisshu Sengupta and Sonali Kulkarni has been decently showcased. A couple of the cases too are relatable & relevant in this era. On the casting front , everyone has performed brilliantly. The USP of this series for sure. Kajol Devgan, as the protagonist excels as expected. Jisshu Sengupta’s character gets to do a lot more this time and delivers a stupendous performance. Veteran actors, Alyy Khan and Sheeba Chaddha are fine and blend in beautifully. Kubbra Sait is a delight, as expected, while Kenneth Desai (Ketan Patel) is a welcome addition & some of his scenes are funny. Sonali Kulkarni delivers a fiery performance and has a crucial role as a feisty yet devious politician. Santana Roach as influencer ShanayaQ is an actor to watch out for. .Ramakant Dayama as the quirky Judge Thakore and Asrani as the brilliant but eccentric Parsi lawyer Navroz Electricwala are welcome surprises and are quite entertaining. Though this Web Series isnt the GOAT , it is definitely worth a dekho especially for the well-executed drama and stupendous performances. Movie Review: Dashavatar ( Marathi film) screening in cinema halls near you!! This movie can be compared to Kantara as it has a similar storyline. An aging performer of mythological plays ( Dashavatar), Babuli ( Dilip Prabhavalkar) living peacefully with his son Siddharth Menon finds his life turned upside down when his son is killed by the mining mafia for trying to turn whistleblower. How the father turns his acting skills into a powerful weapon, transforming himself into various characters from hos Dashavatar play and exacts revenge on the perps forms the rest of the premise!! Dilip Prabhavalkar is the Sachin Tendulkar of the film !! Just brilliant even at the age of 81 ... I can't imagine anyone else essaying this role. Sunil menon as the son , Priyadarshini Indalkar as his love interest & Mahesh Manjrekar playing an upright cop also perform well in their small roles. Bharat Jadhav unfortunately is under utilized, u cant even recognise the poor fellow in his new avatar. Any small time actor could have played the part. The cinematography is great, showcasing the beauty of Konkan very well .. the dark & eerie forest scenes create an eerie ambience giving u goosebumps . Most of the songs compliment the narrative perfectly though a couple of them end up slowing the narrative too, in the first half. On the flipside .. the film takes a long time to get into full throttle.. a bit slow to start off. It picks up stream somewhere near the interval and becomes quite gripping. Again towards the end it becomes a bit preachy ( same story repeated time and again in Marathi cinema ) and the climax seems stretched!! Cudve done with a bit of trimming at the end . Not in the same league as Kantara but refreshing to see something different from the Marathi film industry!! Cast too needs to be appreciated 👍 🙂 Definitely worth a watch ... Web Series Review: Andhera streaming on Prime video !! A bit late in reviewing this.. but here goes.. Premise - The story follows Inspector Kalpana Kadam ( Priya Bapat) who is investigating mysterious suicides committed by random people connected to an unscrupulous Pharma Company . During the course of her investigation, she interacts with Jay Sheth , a young medical student who is undergoing treatment at the same pharma company and is experiencing weird hallucinations.It is then, that Kalpana suspects something far more sinister going on which may have catastrophic consequences on humanity itself!! Andhera is a well made sci-fi horror series that will keep u engaged all throughout.What sets this show apart is its ability to seamlessly blend elements of the supernatural with science in the contemporary era making it very relatable. Among the cast : - Priya Bapat delivers a stellar performance as Inspector Kalpana Kadam, - former RJ and YouTuber Prajakta Koli shines as Rumi who assists Jay and also plays his love interest - Karanvir Malhotra gives a brilliant performance and breathes life into Jay’s tormented character - Surveen Chawla too has given a decent performance as Priya Bapat's love interest The primary antagonist, "Tama" (Sanskrit for darkness or shadow), is a chilling embodiment of darkness &fear and has been brilliantly showcased. - Director Raghav Dar’s direction needs to be lauded, especially for the sharp editing and use of VFX which fortunately doesn't seem over the top ,enhancing the series’ eerie aesthetic. Movie Review: The Thursday Murder club streaming on Netflix!! Four senior citizens Pierce Brosnan , Hellen Mirren , Ben Kingsley & Celia Imrie spend their time at a retirement home solving cold case murders for fun, but their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn when they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands. A murder takes place in their retirement home and it is up to our four musketeers with some additional help from Noami Ackie , a bored inspector to solve the crime. The plot is not too complex , but at the same time has a lot of twists and turns to keep u guess all throughout. The chemistry between the lead cast is awesome.. their quirky behaviour.. diverse backgrounds ,yet working dedicatedly towards their end goal ie bringing the perp to justice is what is heartening to see. A tightly woven script that maintains a right dose of intrigue and humour that will definitely keep u engrossed and raise a few chuckles too along the way!! I'll put this movie in the same class as the Knives out franchise .... Enjoyable cases with enigmatic clues and a ultra talented cast that keeps u hooked with their stellar performances based on decades of experience. A Definite 👍 from me!! Movie Review: Tehran streaming on Zee5 !! Based on true events and set against the backdrop of the attack on the Israel embassy in New Delhi in 2012, Tehran tells the story of a tough gritty police officer ACP Rajeev Kumar ( John Abraham) who travels all the way to Iran to execute an audacious assassination of the perpetrators who have caused India to become collateral damage in the covert Iran- Israel war !! However he finds himself with no allies as India, on the verge of signing an important gas deal with Iran deserts him. Indian diplomats find themselves in hot soup as India has friendly ties with both countries involved. With everything going against him ,will Rajeev Kumar get his man and prove to the world that India is no pushover and cannot be trifled with !! This is John Abrahams film all the way as he bashes up baddies right from the word go ... His forte and comfort zone.. just brilliant. Apart from some awesome action scenes, emotional scenes depicting his trauma , anguish and turmoil at seeing an innocent girl and partner die and yet having to move ahead and execute his plans have been showcased very well. The four ladies in the film Madhurima Tulli who plays his wife , Manushree Chillar as his partner( didnt like her hairstyle though🙁) , Neeru Bajwa as a RA&W officer and Elnaaz Nourozi have small but meaningful roles in the film. Also the antagonist, Iranian actor Hadi Khanjanpour as Afshar Hosseini has done an excellent job and his performance is second only to John Abraham's!! Aly khan looks smart and handsome as Johns superior who works within the system to help him. Fast paced narrative, a gripping plot , great direction along with slick editing & action make this film an enjoyable watch !! Drives home a strong message too !! Go for it guys !! Set in Edinburgh, Scotland , this series tells the story of Carl , a former top rated detective who suffers from PTSD after an attack by an unknown assailant that leaves his partner paralyzed and another rookie cop dead. Upon rejoining the force , Carl is asked to Head a new dept dealing exclusively with cold cases and is shunted in a dark basement which earlier used to be a urinal 😢. How Carl, along with his two quirky assistants - Akram , brilliant ex- Syrian police officer and Rose ,another officer who has been kept off active duty for over 2 yrs, open a 4 yr old case involving the disappearance of a lawyer - a case that will change their lives , forms the rest of the premise!! Seems slow at first with the brooding, brash & arrogant Carl trying to adjust to his new life after the botched up operation . But things get interesting with the entry of Akram and Rose in his team and the opening of the cold case. As they delve deeper,startling things come to including the victims past , a possible botched up investigation among others. A standout in the cast is the character Akram, who steals every scene he is in with a commanding screen presence making him one of the most memorable characters in this series. The entire cast is brilliantly chosen, and their chemistry is effortless, especially between the lead detectives. You won’t find forced humour or unnecessary side plots here. Dept. Q respects its audience’s intelligence, staying true to its plot and delivers flawlessly to make it a memorable watch. Bingewatch worthy option for the weekend!! Highly recommended!!
