I've always been a fan of the first, live-action film "Pacific Rim" but not for anything to do with the story (or acting) which, let's face it, in both cases barely existed at all. But the visuals and scale of the movie were just great eye candy to behold. At least I thought so and still do. That said, not generally being a super big anime fan and given the weaknesses of the movie I didn't go into watching this with a whole lot of enthusiasm nor high expectations but it surprised me in a big way. Visually it's obviously not as awe-inspiring as the live action film (how could it be?) but where this falls behind the film, this series greatly outmatches the film in all the film's weak areas of acting (in this case I mean voice-acting obviously) and in a story. It's almost like the yin to the film's yang in that putting the two together you get a strong whole as opposed to two average halves. I ended up binging the entire two seasons in less than 24 hours just due to sheer enjoyment and desire to see what the story went. I really loved this and was super bummed out when I realized I was at the end. I wish it had gone forward another couple of seasons.
I've been learning recently to appreciate anime more and more and this show advanced that appreciation a good deal and I think even folks who aren't particularly fond of anime, but who might be (begrudgingly, and perhaps secretly) fans of "Pacific Rim" (most definitely the first of the two btw...the second live-action film was DREADFUL), then I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy this. It took me from skeptic to fan anyhow.
