There are layers to the story and then there is Rang de Basanti. Every character is like an onion. I rewatched the movie in 2025 with newer lenses, my goodness, I found layering so deep and powerful. It isn't just about parallels of past and present, or how boys and freedom fighters show similar character. It is also about symbolic showcasing and pivoting points. Eg., DJ and Azad parallels are much deeper than just behavioural. DJ's love is a firangi who came to India and Azad's love is his watan which is under Firangi who came to India, not only that Su's grandfather eye witnessed the execution of Baghat singh and co in times where communication was mostly vocal and he recorded it in his dairy, whereas his granddaughter, witnessed execution of DJ and co via radio and recorded it in video. Su was witness to what went before and his grandfather was witness what went after. His grandfather searched for answers to the questions his mind asked after witnessing freedom fighters, while Su came looking for answers and found questions after witnessing the youth. So on. There are so many more layers to every line said, every scene enacted.
I'm mesmerised and certainly re-entertained.
