There are tons of mixed reviews over this movie on the internet and to make it more helpful, I’m going to put out this honest review as someone who grew up on this movie.
𝐏𝐥𝐨𝐭:This movie revolves around young opera singer Christine Daae who grew up in an opera house in Paris, 1900. Christine’s father was a famous violinist that passed when she was little and told her of a “angel of music” who would teach her to sing. For a while, Christine believed the “angel” coaching her was her fathers spirit before she learns that this angel is really the opera “ghost” who is known for terrifying the people of the opera house and causing havoc. It is later revealed that the opera ghost’s (the phantom) reason for his borderline obsession is because he longs to be loved.
𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐭: The casting was executed well,
with all actors understanding the roles they play and how to execute them. The only problem I have is that there are some parts in the movie where the acting seems bland and lack emotion, almost like they’re reading the script and not immersing the watchers in the movie.
𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜: This movie is a classical rendition of the well known musical, and the songs are performed beautifully. Most of the movie’s plot is revealed or advanced with the singing…and sometimes it’s a lot to take in, however, the vocals and emotion in the music are beautiful. Songs like “Past the Point Of No Return” and “Music of The Night” are beautifully executed.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝:This movie has a solid plot with a few twists and an intriguing storyline that keeps the watchers hooked. The soundtrack is classic and timeless, and the story itself is beautiful. The atmosphere of the shots perfectly portray the time period, giving it its own ethereal feel. The actors are all beautiful and unique, each with insane singing talents, not to mention “Think of Me,” which Rossum absolutely devoured!
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐝: Mainly singing, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but could be a lot for watchers that aren’t into musicals. Some points where the storyline gets confusing and the actors portray what’s happening in a “emotionless” way. Though I grew up on this movie, I have to be in a specific mood to watch it. It’s not necessarily a movie that you can turn on and enjoy just because unless you’re going through a huge “phase.”
𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥: Though it definitely has its flaws, this movie is a classic, portraying one of the most known love stories of all time. It should be a movie everyone should watch, even if not interested in musicals because I’ve learnt that this movie can change a lot of minds about the prejudices of musicals.
