Them: The Scare is an amazing macabre story pushing its broken fingers into the allegories of domestic abuse, neglect and substance abuse.
Deborah Ayorinde is back again from Them: Covenant as Detective Dawn, an LAPD detective working before the LA Riots in 1991. Surrounded by officers who see her as insufficient, she has to work even harder to prove herself to her colleagues, all while raising a son Kel - played by Joshua J. Williams, living with his own anxieties and balancing school, music and social life with his diagnosis of OCD.
Luke James as Edmund Gaines was complete surprise for me, as I hadn't even heard of the actor prior to Them: The Scare. His dedication to his character's ever developing arc. I'm hoping they'll bring back Lovecraft Country and he can lead the cast. His performance in The Scare is proof of his range.
Pam Grier as Athena is an amazing choice for the character. Athena's testament to trying to keep the ship from crashing upon the sirens shore. Her working at a toy shop plays into her secrets being her prized playthings she's kept hidden away. Weaving the thread of love and mystery into the fabric of her family dynamic, makes her question her choices, good and bad.
The Scare is a complex nightmare with a soundtrack like a daydream. The season ties into the first so well, and I really hope that a third season is coming down the pipeline.
Little Marvin is creating really wonderful television.
