I've watched it and it is honestly not that bad. People are mad that they cast a POC for Peter and Tinkerbell along with the fact that there are girls in the Lost Boys. (I think they should've framed their introduction better in the trailer..maybe some of these reviews would not be so harsh). I don't mind that they included girls there as it didn't actually impact the story at all. Wendy can still be a motherly character with other girls there...to say that it takes away from her character seems iffy.
I found that the movie itself was too dark and not whimsy enough to be Neverland and I have mixed feelings about Hook's character. I like the added development, however, I have always been on the fence about how some people want his character to be portrayed. (Trying to keep this spoiler free). I thought Ever Anderson carried this movie and she was an excellent Wendy. She and Tigerlily also had some great moments on screen together. On Wendy's character, I do wish they kept the more maternal Wendy, as the "badass woman" character always erases the idea that you can be motherly and still strong, Wendy should have both. The main issue I have with that, honestly, is that it takes away from Peters's character and their contrast with one another. Leaving Peter feeling a little bland in some areas.
I love Peter Pan and, like many, am partial to the 2003 version. Overall I'd probably rate this movie 3 stars but I'm giving it an extra so hopefully more people will give it a chance since it seemed well done to me (not someone who focuses on special effects so I can't say much there). And at the end of the day, these are children so to go after them is unnecessary.
