I've been to see the new Candyman twice. It is an excellent film. I very much liked the way the new film incorporated the story from the original film and didn't just try to update the the original one slightly. I don't see why some criticise the film because of it's central positioning of race in the story line. Candyman is basically a character who is made - he is abused and terrorised because of his race, whether in his original incarnation or in the more recent versions that the film shows. I think it also highlighted the way that although many of the central characters were affluent black people, seemingly well incorporated into white culture, it did not take much for this pretence to fall apart. Even if you choose to forget completely the political undertones of Candyman the film is still unsettling and great to watch.
