This is a great book, especially because the narrator is one of the main characters. he was able to captivate me and his writing style kept me going. elliot chase was not a good man (maybe because of all the childhood trauma he had to endure) and he phrases the narrative in a way to make him look good. I wouldn't say that his character is very likeable and I think it was meant to be like that, but anyway, I did not dislike him and was rooting for him until the very last page. because we were reading Elliot's perspective (and because he was extremely delusional) I couldn't figure out how the relationships between every other character were and through the last few chapters, we see how they all think about Elliot. I don't think Lana would've reacted like that if Lana and Elliot were such close friends as he'd told us. and also it is said that Leo detested Elliot, which I was surprised to hear because, in Elliot's narrative, he was kind of the fun uncle for Leo, and Agathi also hated Elliot which we would've never guessed. After all, I thought they would've stuck together because of their mutual love for Lana and hatred for Jason.
but these all just show us how unreliable and flawed Elliot's narrative is even after this I still rooted for him (yes, yes, even after reading that he shot Lana) until it was revealed that he stole his successful play which was written by Barabara, that chapter made me realize that I was rooting for the ultimate villain
I've read all three of michealide's books and I think this one comes second after The Silent Patient (sidenote: I hated The Maidens I rated it 2 stars I think, maybe I should reread it) this is a really good book but i also understand how this may not be everyone's cup of tea
