Honestly, I hated that I liked this book. But I kept reading it because it had a really compelling story. All the characters are semi-great, except for Rune—he’s the worst.
Seriously, Rune’s whole character revolved around Poppy. His happiness, Poppy. His passion for photography, Poppy. The reason he became an edge lord, Poppy. The reason he hates his parents and neglects his little brother but then slowly starts to hang out with said brother, Poppy. Everything about Rune is all Poppy.
This book is also extremely corny. Poppy the quirky girl, who is hated because she’s dating the hottest boy in school. Rune the hot boy that the quirky girl is dating, has an accent. These cliches are pretty cute, it just isn’t good in this book.
I haven’t finished this book so I don’t know if Rune ever makes up with his parents, but I hope he does. He is so unreasonable. He had two years to sit and sulk but he’s still mad about it?
That’s another thing I have to complain about, Rune’s anger—also because of Poppy. He carries his heartbreak like an open, gaping wound that never heals. The thing about wounds is that they’re supposed to heal even if there’s a scar. But his wound never does. For two whole years he was angry at Poppy, at his parents, and at himself. Realistically, I’m sure it’d still sting when he’d think about her after a while, but he would get over it. Why did he spiral, omg??
Rune’s obsession with Poppy wasn’t healthy, seriously he needs psychiatric help. You can’t depend on one person to bring you happiness that much.
The author did a great job with Poppy tho, love her. Even if she does have her flaws (ahem, quirky/good girl archetype). Poppy is nice, caring, really sweet, and wise for her age. The things she says are a real mind opener.
In summary, Rune bad, Poppy good, Rune suck.
