It’s a great film. A WW1 movie that shows the POV from the German side really shows the audience that there is no good or bad people in war. The film does a great job of portraying how horrific war really is. Without spoiling the movie, I can say it does a fantastic job of keeping the audience on edge and wondering if there is a good ending to all of the chaos. The beginning of the film portrays how propaganda is fed to the youth to glorify war. And it’s not talked about enough amongst others who have watched the film but throughout the movie they show the negotiations between the French and German for a surrender which is historically significant as the Treaty of Versailles is known to have been cruel, foreshadowing the events that would lead to WW2. This is one of those movies that can truly make a big change on your perspective. Towards the end of the movie you’re feeling that you just want the war end to save the lives of not only the main character Paul Baumer but all the other young soldiers; because there is no glory or heroics in war just despair.
