Adults teaching their kids how to behave and a theme that gets repeated and repeated, except this one pulls out all the stops. Someone gets saved, someone saves herself and someone can’t save himself...the imagery of the midway sets up the juxtaposition and building tension that eventually gets to the message. Whether taking drugs or alcohol the message was clear. Teens are trying on mature and immature behaviour that they have no idea the consequences. As an adult with adult children my biggest fear was that my kids would get hurt and that all I could do to prevent it was try to instil logic and calm regarding whatever circumstances they found themselves in.
The intensity of the switch back and forth between characters and dialogue works because we see the connections and ongoing confusion about the teens relationships. Every generation has dealt with some form of abuse of its youth. World War I and II killed millions of youth and we haven’t learned a damn thing!
