While originally interested as a Conan O'Brien Dramatic Debut, If I Had Legs I'd Kick You follows a Psychiatric downturn of the main character. The movie centers around 3-main plot points which slowly unravel the main characters Psychological well-being. Conan O'Brien serves as her psychologist and makes up maybe 10 minutes of the film. While his performance serves the dry-humor dialogue well, it's not anywhere close to the comedic specificity we've all come to love.
General Movie Thoughts: This movie reminds me of Uncut Gems in the sense that multiple problems arise and it generally becomes an overwhelming burden that builds into our minds. The hardest part compared to a film like Uncut Gems is this film lacks a rewarding payoff. MINOR Spoiler: The films ending leaves more to be explained and only aids to the idea that the main character has essentially become the very thing she tries to help (someone suffering from mental illness). I think the acting is done very well and I was pleased that there was at least something of value in this film. The best way I can describe this film is Hell on Earth for a Mom.
In closing: As someone interested in a Psychology major, I do think the film asks interesting questions regarding the Psychology/Psychiatrist profession. The main character deals with patients from concerning levels of OCD, simple loneliness, and a fitting house wife who has first world problems. While dealing with suffering patients is difficult, the film emphasizes the importance of a Psychologists mental health as well. There are points in the film where the viewer has to ask, At what point would you just get rid of a patient? For the main character, there is a connection between her daughter and her patients in that she can't give up.
