Being a big fan the Gerard Depardieu version of this story I found this version to be a huge disappointment! Some of the script is just ridiculous and the characters unconvincing. In addition the script in the Gerard Depardieu version is in French and delivered with real passion and the accompanying music by Bruno Coulais is just amazing! Not one I would watch again!

Living in the shadows of movie masterpieces such as Gladiator, The Duellists and Bladerunnner to name just three of many, it must be challenging for the Director/Producer to maintain levels of pure brilliance! Napoleon is not a bad film! Some of the Cinematography is nothing short of incredible as are some of the backdrops, attention to detail and historical accuracy but the script is lacklustre and I would have expected more forcefulness of character from the superb Joaqim Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby which they are both more than capable of! Overall a visual treat but it doesn’t stoke your emotional response in the way that previous Ridley Scott movies do!
