If you live in LA or Portland like I do, you know exactly who Emma Stone's character is and you already love to hate her. Privileged, narcissistic and totally not self aware, the textbook millenial white savior. The format of the show is very "peeping Tom" in its cinematography, which emphasizes one of the main themes presented in the show, specifically social media/ reality tv's tendency to promote the most cringey voyeuristic side of humanity. The houses being mirrored is symbolic, Emma's character is often faced with the mirror of her flawed myopic view of the world and consistently fails to recognize or acknowledge it. The music and Nathan's awkward way of interacting makes the tone of this show purposefully painful to watch, just as painful as it is to watch clueless white people try to magically solve the racial/economic problems of the US with half baked ideas of inclusion invented by government and rich elite. It's 100 percent a dark comedy but also basically a horror show. Racism, classism, narcissism, social media, and reality TV are probably the most terrifying things I can think of. This show won't be interesting to anyone who doesn't enjoy being forced to feel uncomfortable, because it's in being uncomfortable where true horror and true comedy are found.
