The first thing I have to say for this movie is that the animation was WONDERFUL, I mean there were some parts where I was just so in awe at the animation (THE COOKING SCENE>?) I'm highly impressed with the detail that still maintains the cartoony stylization. The plot was O.K. for me, but I'm not the target audience so I mostly expected as much, I really wish I could have seen this when I was 13. I felt a bit like the cultural stereotypes and generational trauma was overplayed as well. Her dad and her friends were likable but *SPOILER* I'm sick and tired of the "befriending the bully" trope tbh, that kid messed with a lot of his peers' senses of self and mental health, idc that he got embarrassed too or whatever *SPOILER OVER*
The reviews on this movie saying it's bad because the main characters are cringy have clearly never stepped foot in a middle school -- that's literally the target audience and if you don't think you were cringy back then, you're lying. I also saw people mad that the characters looked too young, but I was BEYOND refreshed to not see overly sexualized/aged depictions of children -- they're styles were mismatched and colorful, they showed different body types, I think if I could have watched this when I was 13 I would feel so bloody seen. The last negative I keep seeing for this movie that's bugging me is that she's too explosive or reckless as the panda... did the... did the metaphor fly completely over your head or..?
