The depictions of the close relationships between soldiers during long, harsh and close-quarter conditions were one of the things I really liked about this story. The relationships between Stephen and Weir, and Jack Firebrand and Shaw, where they're far more than friends, more than relatives even, but something more like spouses. Not in a sexual sense, of course, but on some other level that's where they were.
