Was so excited to see this but couldn’t finish. It was poorly constructed—should have delved more into the New York article and what it said—besides coining the objectionable phrase. And I never quite understood why the phrase was so problematic in terms of their careers. I always thought it was kind of a cool, ironic nod to the brilliance of the Rat Pack. But what really happened: were they blacklisted? Did they become a laughingstock? I was in my late teens early twenties when these movies came out, and I thought these were magnificent films with amazing actors, “brat pack” be damned! I still enjoy the movies today and have watched them with my now-grown children, who also adored them. And it seemed pretty funny to me that in this film they were biting the proverbial hand that fed them. Looked to me that many of them were living pretty well, and many of them haven’t done anything to speak of after that time period. Is the film title a self-fulfilling prophecy? That’s what it felt like to me!
