Unusual and uncomfortable are the words that come to mind when watching The Devil All The Time (TDATT). The acting is great, the cinematography is good, and the music contrast the extreme amount of seemingly meanless violence. For me, TDATT struggles to find an identity until about 3/4ths of the way through the movie. A lot of eyebrow raising, attention grabbing, gritty, gorey things happen, but you really don't know where the plot of the film is going (despite the fact that it is narrated) until just after the halfway marker of the film. The pacing of the film is also very inconsistent and slow when there isn't any murder or blood present on the screen. There also isn't any real build up to the violence and gore shown in the film, it just straightup happens. Overall TDATT is a film about the human cycle of suffering inflicted upon others because of suffering that just made me feel uncomfortable and weird until about 70 minutes.
TLDR: its a slow paced montage of blood, gore, nudity, and sex for no reason with skewed religious views sprinkled on top up until the 70 minute mark where you figure out the plot line of the movie and where its going.
