As with all of Shreve's books, the characters stay with you. The sense of time and place are memorable, the Massachusetts towns, Kenya, etc. I know the former, not the latter..Finished it this afternoon after another book, borrowed had to be returned. My only dilemma is the ending. It's not what you expect and open to interpretation. Thomas and Linda definitely embody adolescent dreams, and hovering like another character is the Roman Catholic church
