I am not a horror fan, but my girlfriend sold it to me as a psychological thriller. I was prepared for the unsettling glimpses of mental health, and am usually one to shake off 'the supernatural' with the use of logic and reason...
But! The film was so cleverly written and presented that you can't trust your own instincts, and that is what started to tip me into (I'll be honest) panic.
What previously seemed ridiculous, now became outright scary, you can't trust anyone or anything you see, all of which I believe is completely by design. Ari aster is a master of drawing your attention away from the true story and taking your mind 'down the garden path'. I would estimate at 10 different points in the film I emphatically called out what I believed was about to happen, only to have my fears realised moments later every time, as the true outcome was always far worse than I had envisaged.
I will be sleeping with the light on tonight, and if anyone examines my girlfriends arm in the next few days, deep imprints of my hands will be found along them. But, from a technical point of view, and due to the unique nature of what aster has created, I will rave about this film to anyone that will listen. I will sell it with a fair disclosure (probably involving some fruity language), but I will none the less be selling it.
Ps, Alex wolffs performance (not to short change colette, but I have come to expect nothing else from her), for someone of his age, and fairly limited acting background, I was astounded. The depth and range of his character was phenomenal, and I will be following his career with deep anticipation.
Keep going aster... Though god only knows what's going on in your mind on a day to day basis.
