I really believe that almost all of the negative reviews were written by people who either watched barely any of the show or simply did not understand the meaning of it.
This is probably THE BEST show I have ever watched and I never look at reviews but I was curious since it was such a great show and I had heard nothing about it.
Nitpicking the fact that the show did not 100% accurately depict blindness is really just silly. While, of course, it would have been ideal if they casted an actress who was actually blind, Murphy’s actress did a DAMN GOOD JOB. She looks around at things a good portion of the time and when she is “blankly staring straight” that is not because she’s blind... it’s because she is depressed and numb to everything around her. We are not supposed to love her character in the beginning episodes... that’s the point. She grows as it goes on and she takes a step back and realizes that she wants to be a bettter person.
As for the racial comments, they definitely DID NOT stereotype the black characters. Sure, some of them were drug dealers but many of them were very good and upstanding citizens (Darnell, Tyson, Detective Barker, Murphy’s dad, Jean). Also, there were white people who played antagonists, too (maybe even more). Claiming that the show depicted Murphy as a “white savior” is so false that it’s laughable. One of the main parts of the plot is that she creates problems for the people around her! If anything, Tyson saved HER.
I can see how some people thought the first few episodes were cheesy and unrealistic, but what show isn’t? The plot also gets WAYYYYY better as it goes on, especially season 2. I was always on the edge of my seat and it was not predictable at all.
Great actors, great plot, realistic problems, and diverse and complex characters. Ignore the negative reviews I am begging you.
