Exceptionally well written and fantastically cast, with some stellar performances and camerawork. The pacing sometimes feels a little off, which I felt made this a show to watch over a week, as opposed to one day. Incredible musical scoring.
Uzo Aduba is, of course, the stand out; she delivers a delightful performance as the unflinchingly esoteric Detective Cordelia Cupp, a woman whose quirks and interests feel natural instead of forced.
Special nod to Ken Marino and Molly Griggs for committing to making their characters (Harry Hollinger, Chief Advisor, and Lily Schumacher, White House Social Media) as unlikeable as possible. The story arcs for these two characters in particular is brilliant to beholden, and Marino and Griggs play them perfectly.
I also loved the performance by Susan Kelechi Watson as Chief Usher Jasmine Haney, as she really embodies the quiet calm that was expected by her predecessor, A. B. Wynter (played by Giancarlo Espocito).
The Residence is a campy murder mystery with the theatricality of ‘Only Murders’ and ‘Knives Out’, but scaled back with a similar tone to the British TV adaptations of Miss Marple and Poirot. Don’t go into this thinking this is a second screen show, it does require attention.
