Long ago, I served in the U.S. Army during the Cold War. On two occasions I visited East Berlin, and had a brief taste, of life behind the wall.
This movie resonates with me, for many reasons. It accurately depicts life then. Reveals the depth that the state would go to subjugate their people.
The truth, only known, after the wall fell. Till then, all that was thought to be, was uncertain. Only the access to the Stasi records, conveyed to what degree the surveillance was. Total.
Then, like now, the populace has no privacy. Only now, it is the technology, that is so advanced, so sophisticated, that a persons privacy can be completely violated, without self awareness.
Then, like now, that state of surveillance, is total. No matter where you live in this world. There is no privacy. None. If you come onto the radar of the intelligence apparatus, you will have no privacy, ever again.
This movie, truly replicates what it was like then. There has yet to be a movie, that reveals the truth of how invasive the surveillance is presently. That, is a movie, that won't be made.
Long ago, the English band, "The Police," sang a song called, "Every Breath you Take." They saw, the future, and all that was possible. What was possible, and far more, is our existence presently.
