I read the book recently just curious how much had changed. This movie took the character building and slapped a few scenes distorted from the book that destroyed the looming sense of doom. The pet Semetary and deadfall scenes needed more. No nanny or Juds wife to introduce the death forcibly upon the family. No warning on the road via Jud. You don’t get that fatherly bond with Jud. Jud should have been more prominent and the disagreements between Lois and Rachel’s parents are gone. The scene where he saves gage I thought would amp up the loss feeling but they skip over really showing grief. It should have been longer and Ellie was away when church passed. The added Zelda was great in thought but needed more and the change in story really made me lack empathy for Rachel. I didn’t feel for anyone except gage but not even to walk away feeling anything but angry I wasted my time. If you’ve never seen the first, and never read the book, or can differentiate without care maybe. But as a stand alone horror movie I still would rate it low.
