I started reading Percy Jackson when I was in the 6th grade. I am now 23, and still have an obsession! That being said, I was so bothered by the films being so disrespectful to the source material and going out of its way to make things different “for the teens.” I was hesitant about singing the show's praises until
I knew/had seen more.
Well, I've seen more. This show isn’t a 1:1 adaptation (which it shouldn’t be expected to be), but where things diverge from the source material it’s like a breath of fresh air. It stays very consistent with the tone of TLT, and already does a better job foreshadowing events of future seasons/books than the original TLT did, in my opinion (the benefit of hindsight, most likely, from Rick).
The kid actors are really good. If you were nitpicking, you can tell they’re ’kid actors’ in, like, one or two scenes — but, holy moly, are these children talented! Walker Scobell has insane comedic timing and brings a vulnerability to Percy; Leah S Jeffries comes across as wise and mature, yet suitably acts like a kid when the situation calls for it. Aryan Simhadri is a lot less anxious than I imagined Grover, admittedly (and I related the most to Grover when I read the books, he’s MY BOY), but his take on the character is appropriately funny and makes me REALLY look forward to future seasons when his Pan story arc gets developed.
Super duper fun, and they’re also getting the most iconic bits and pieces (“you drool when you sleep”)!
This show is making me so happy, I’ve been started announcing to my family every time a new episode drops 😅 my dad’s probably over it by now but he just doesn’t *get it*, man, it’s Percy Jackson 😫 I can’t be expected to contain myself under these circumstances
