This is my favorite rendition of any Wizard of Oz spinoffs, even beating the original in my opinion.
Someone in the review section said that 'fairy tales are supposed to be dark', and I completely agree. Even the more classic children movies like Snow White and Cinderella had darker origins, especially with The Brothers Grimm. I don't believe that this movie should be lighthearted or even happy, and considering with everything, one has to give it credit for being a really good dark film. No, not dark like A Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th, but dark in tone-no slasher here, just some things that can seriously impress you-especially for the time it came out.
I'm disappointed that not those many people enjoy the movie, because to me, it deserves way more credit. Picture Lovecraft teaming up with Brother Grimm to make a book, and then Stephen King adapting it to film (except better than Trucks, WAY BETTER THAN TRUCKS), and then watch this movie and say that it doesn't resemble closely to what would come out of it. This movie is completely outstanding, and ever since I watched it as a young kid, I have and continue to be finding more and more things that impress me each and every time.
This movie deserves love, way more than it gets. I hope it makes a comeback, because this film is wonderfully awesome. I love all of the characters, the way it deals with 'insanity', and how it shows that not every childhood life is comforted and fairy-tale-like, since the original had even a good beginning with Dorothy. That's mostly all thrown out the window and returned with something much more dark and gruesome, being allowed to be viewed and entertaining both children and adults. I wish it the best, and I know that I'm going to keep watching it until I die
