Last Christmas turns out not to be a rom-com. It starts out like a rom-com but takes a twist, which I won't say, because that would spoil it. Overall, Last Christmas is a meditation on the meaning of life, with romantic parts and comedic parts, along with serious/sad parts. If you go in with your heart set on a standard rom-com you might leave disgruntled, but if you are open to something different, you may enjoy it. It's like the movie Once, with extra philosophy. The casting is great. Kate/Katarina is a fully developed character, however, the character Tom needed a bit more complexity. He is too perfect (which the plot twist tries to explain). The city of London shines bright - I've never seen it look so good on film. Kate is beloved and merry in the end.
