(SPOILER REVIEW!)
As most people know Joel dies in the first few hours in a pretty brutal way. People seem to be annoyed at this saying that he deserved better. But at the same time Joel dying really showed me that this games world is more unforgiving and more dark than any other game I’ve played. When was the last time someone you loved died a glorious heroic death? Yeah it barley ever happens. That’s why this game is so real and grounding. This game isn’t scared to take the story down to the deepest darkest path possible. And I really applaud it for doing so. People are upset saying that killing Joel ruined the whole dynamic between him and Ellie. But I have to disagree as there are many other characters in this game that are worth exploring and getting to know. There are parts of this game where Ellie goes lone wolf with no one with her to have fun interactions with but this game is meant to be Ellie’s game and show her hate and need to find her farther figure’s killer. This game shows that there are no bad or good side as everyone has their own story behind their actions. We find out that Joel killed Abby’s dad whilst rescuing Ellie which then resulted in her seeking revenge. Even though Abby does some pretty bad things in the game, so does everyone else, including Ellie. Abby and Ellie are basically the same character in my opinion and are in the same position. Both are after revenge for their fallen friends. At some point in the game you get to play as Abby (for a long amount of time) and you get to see her side of the story. At first I was sceptical of this but over time I grew fond of the character as her and Ellie’s motivations were quite literally the same. Even though she was the one to kill everyone’s favourite character Joel, she had a pretty good reason to have done it. Playing as Abby made me realise that she wasn’t a terrible evil person and she just wanted to avenge her dead farther. Another point I feel like people are pissed off about is that Ellie let Abby live. In all honesty I was glad that Abby lived. It showed that Ellie realised that killing this person won’t avenge Joel, it will only draw blood on his name. Letting Abby live to me respected Joel’s name more than killing her and showed that Ellie’s character realised what she was doing was wrong and gave closure to the endless killing and hate. All the things in this game that people so on so ‘hated’ were a positive to me. Again that’s only my thoughts. This game is my favourite game I’ve played all year. Maybe one of my favourite games ever. Another major point in the development in the story actually relies on you as the player. If you are hateful towards abbey and don’t forgive her it it means that you’ve held on to the hate that Ellie has had through out the game making you no better than any of the characters in the game themselves. You were then unable to let go of the anger and naughty dog has shown that you would have continued the cycle of hate. But if you can forgive abbey it just goes to show that you have seen both sides of the story and have shown forgiveness. To me this is very smart of naughty dog, as it shows who the player of the game actually is. But again everyone can have their own opinions, that thought kinda only just came to me. I don’t think it reaches the heights of the first game but it definitely comes close to me.
