I give it 3 stars - for the nostalgia it brought back.
Look, I'm a massive fan of The Librarians franchise. Love the movies with Noah Wyle and I've watched the TV series (that lasted 4 seasons) a couple of times. It was a series that was fun, light hearted, but still gave depth to its characters.
However, this new one - the first episode was a bit chaotic.
I understand that Dean Devlin is sticking to a formula that works - then stick with it.
First episode we are introduced to the new main The Librarian - Vikram Chamberlain, played by Callum McGowan - obviously the replacement for Flynn Carson - with the same kind of irreverent, charming energy.
Next, we have Jacob Stone (Christian Kane) from the original series, which was a breath of fresh air.
Then we have the new guys -
Lysa Pascal (Played by Olivia Morris) = The new Cassandra Cillian
Connor Green (Played by Bluey Robinson) = The new Ezekiel Jones
Charlie Cornwall (Played by Jessica Green) = The new Eve Baird
I can't help but draw these parallels ... It's so obvious.
I'd have preferred FRESH and ORIGINAL characters -
Like maybe a male version of Cassandra. Female version of Ezekiel. With new backstories and talents.
As for the new Eve Baird ... some reviewer said she looks like she could go through a wall. And I would say, "My man, her face looks like a wall!"
Jessica Green is a stunning woman - though her acting leaves a LOT to be desired. She comes across wooden, compared to Rebecca Romijn's acting.
Rebecca did a fantastic job - she had charisma, presence, acting chops.
Jessica Green does not I'm afraid.
The new Cassandra and Ezekiel are okay - and not yet fully fleshed out.
In the previous series, Episode 1 of Season 1, introduced the characters gradually - with excellent back stories and they even got invitations.
In this new one, they're breaking the original lore of the Library - so now anyone can just join in on the adventures?
At the end of the Episode 1, our side librarians haven't even received their invites to join the Library but they're just tagging along for the next adventure?
Also, monsters are now out gallivanting around in public but there is no consequence or backlash???
I remember in the old series how they'd take great pains to keep things hidden and away from public eyes, taking care of things, or erasing memories with magic or whatever. All that care is lost in this.
And also at one point, Charlie(Jessica Green) is facing off with the monster who is attacking, but mid-attack it gives her a minute to tie back her hair in a pony tail? Like what?
Eve Baird always had her hair tied back because she was a Guardian and knew she'd have to fight.
Anyway ... I will keep watching this, to see if it improves, to see if Noah Wyle makes an appearance ... and hopefully, it adds more depth and originality in the upcoming episodes.
At the moment, I am underwhelmed by this show.
