This adaption does not do either the novel in which it is based, or the 1994 film adaption which it tried to emulate in casting decisions, any justice. Florence Pugh made for a too unrefined Amy- her voice is too deep and her features too heavy for the role. While she is an excellent actor, I believe she was only cast for the role due to her fleeting resemblance to a young Kirsten Dunst who played Amy in the 1994 version. Many historical inconsistencies also present themselves- the wearing of lipstick and the presence of William Morris wallpaper in the March family home being but two examples. The main downfall of this adaption however is the unnecessary and confusing jumping around in time. It serves no purpose and had this version been portrayed using a more linear timeframe it would have been excellent in its own right. I also can’t help but notice the five star reviews come mainly from audience members who have not read the book.
