Honestly... We don't have enough LGBT romcoms, and most of them have stupid plots, so hey, at least it's a romcom with the stupid plot that features LGBT characters.. But what I need to say is that this feels very "The Birdcage" plot trope but from a different angle.. "Oh no, I'm not out to my conservative family, and my dad is running for office!" Literally the plot of The Birdcage, except The Birdcage had Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and was waaaay less toxic. Harper Caldwell is an absolutely toxic character (as well as the rest of the family, minus Jane). I get that all relationships have their speedbumps, but from my calculations, this couple has been together for a year, and if the plot was indicative of their relationship at all, it was not a healthy one.
Literally the best part of this movie was Daniel Levy's part towards the end. So go ahead, watch the whole way through just for that. Aubrey Plaza is a blessing and she was darling in this movie, sad she didn't have a bigger role, to be honest.
Also, the fact that this movie ended as positively as it did is extremely unrealistic, at least as far as LGBT lived experiences are concerned.
