I'm American with English roots and I started watching Corrie for that reason only. However, the last few years have seen it addressing serious plot lines and doing the one things soaps do: even though they are potboiler entertainment, they can highlight real problems and help empower viewers. I cheered when Carla showed up her would-be blackmailer and told her truth right there in the Rovers. I am cheering Yasmeen as she comes to terms with coercion and manipulation in a relationship. Somewhere, someone is watching that and thinking, "That's what's going on with me--and I need to get out." So hooray for Corrie.
