This movie was wonderful. After reading some of the reviews, I feel as though many people either don't understand the movie or how dynamic this movie is. This movie is about Ma Rainey, but it wasn't suppose to give you a life story. It's called "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" not "The Life of Ma Rainey." There is a reason behind that. Please watch the behind the scenes film, it gives a wonderful in-depth explanation of the movie. Also understanding the type of work August Wilson created will explain the reason for not having a lot of background information. I personally believe that having an understanding of the Black experience and the time period is enough background information to understand the characters.
I understand how the cursing God scene is very controversial. I personally felt conflicted by it. I still choose to give this movie a 5 star review because the scene was raw and candid. Again, understanding the plight of Black people and the dynamics of faith within the Black community is important to understanding why that scene was so powerful.
Lastly, the fact that the movie ends on a cliff hanger is a major statement. Just like we don't know what happened to the characters, we don't know what happened to or even know of many Black artist who were/are exploited by the industry and society. Yes, we want to know more but the point is we can't have more. At the time people didn't extend enough respect or care for Black artist so that we can know more. We don't know what happened because like many, after the industry got what they wanted, they threw the artists away (hence the final scene).
The acting was outstanding!!!! Oscar Award winning performance.
I love how the movie gave light to a variety of social issues.
