When this film was released, I had already read the book. It exceeded my expectations. Even though some of the flaws are obvious, and Jodie Foster plays a straight woman, it's one of the few good movies with a female hero.
The story also blurs the line between science and religion. They can co-exist. Sagan's universe is big enough to handle it.
