Another reason why we don’t mess with timelines. Mediocre beginning, action packed middle, and colossally garbage end that I will chose to ignore.
[MAJOR SPOILERS]
This movie has been added to the list of why I hate movies that mess with the timeline. Beginning had way too much exposition dumped out on the audience and could’ve been done a better way for first time watchers Then it took a turn with things going so good in the middle portion. Action was great, the stakes were high, the animation was crisp, and the deaths meant something.
But then, they decided to do what I hated the most in movies and games: Mess with the timeline. It has to be done so carefully lest it concludes with the very point it makes out in this movie: nothing mattered. The connections Jim made, the lessons he learned and thus taught others, the lives he touched are all ultimately thrown away. Thanks snapped right out of existence. He will never make the same connections that he did before. Blinky’s full focus will be on Toby, Draal will (maybe) bond with Toby or outright continue to hate Toby, he will never earn the loyalty and friendship of Nomura, or the respect and support of Vendel. That’s all going to be rp Toby, and I’ll get to that later on why he is not a good choice for Trollhunter. The amulet chose Jim and that was made to be no mistake. It was his destiny and we saw in a very important episode that if he never took up the amulet, it would’ve gone to Draal (rest in peace bud.) Yet this movie shows, nah, it would’ve chosen the first bloke to pick it up.
As for Toby, I love him but he is not meant to be THE Trollhunter. He was a hero in his own right but in no way, had the metal for the responsibility. Toby can be initially cowardly, he’s irresponsible, he jumps ahead without thinking, and very easily distracted while Jim already had the inklings of what made him a hero to begin with. He more than makes up for his short comings with his heart and loyalty but he is more of a Samwise, not a Frodo. He was never meant to be the star, even though he is a hero and fundamental part.
This has cemented itself to be among the top five worst series finales and endings I’ve seen.
